Reclaimed Potential
“Not much is easy during a renovation project, but working with Space Theory was.”
The doors were hanging on by duct tape, the decks were rotted out, and yet it was perfect. The home had a special feeling when its owners walked in for the first time—the kind of place that, despite a few blemishes, exuded potential.
The young family that moved in took renovating the entire place into their own hands, careful not to lose the intention of the original 1960s architecture. The couple consulted with one of their fathers, architect Alan Nicholson, who had worked with Henrybuilt before and introduced them to the Space Theory kitchen system. The homeowners were drawn to the system’s ability to represent the same refinement, quality, and high performance as Henrybuilt with a streamlined process, outcome, and therefore lower price point. It was a kitchen capable of modernizing the space while maintaining its original warmth, increasing its functionality, and celebrating what was already there.

Between the two of them, the homeowners had a fair bit of design experience under their belts: one the co-founder of a digital design agency and a new arts and culture magazine and the other a product manager with a background in home furnishings. They also had enthusiasm: the kind that led to all-nighters spent on architectural drawings that were operationalized the next morning. It was a family affair; the kids were involved, too, breaking apart sheetrock and painting all over the walls in the early stages. Essentials.
It was clear that the home was to be tailored to family living: functional, durable, built for activity—and still beautiful.

Reclaimed Potential
The original kitchen had come out of an all-white-everything era, and the homeowners wanted to rethink it, leaning into the wood throughout the rest of the house—an element they were glad they were able to preserve when at a time it had become passé—without feeling too heavy. Between oak, white laminate, green laminate, tile, and marble, the Space Theory kitchen calls out to the mismatched midcentury aesthetic the homeowners sought after, with modern, state-of-the-art functionality.

The inside of the kitchen was as well-considered as the outside during the design process. The homeowners worked with Henrybuilt’s design team to refine their vision, ultimately achieving an open, indoor-outdoor space with more than enough built-in storage for everything they need. A functional layout was conceived to make ample room for everyone in the family to gather at once—a top priority in the day to day.

Creatively and practically, the owners restored what had been falling apart, carrying forward its past while setting the stage for a new chapter.
